The technology, known as TD-SCDMA (time division synchronous code division multiple access), has been in development at Chinese Academy of Telecommunications Technology together with Germany’s Siemens AG.
I’m fully confident that a complete product lineup of TD-SCDMA will be ready for commercial use by next June, Zhang Qi, director-general of China’s Ministry of Information Industry’s Department of Electronics and Information Product Administration told China Daily.
However, it is unclear to what extent TD-SCDMA has the backing from local equipment manufacturers that the Chinese government clearly hopes for. Lenovo, Ningbo Bird, Hisense, and Amoisonic are among those seen as likely suppliers.
The Chinese government is widely felt to have delayed the granting of 3G licenses in the country to give TD-SCDMA a chance to compete with more mature 3G technologies such as WCDMA and CDMA2000.
