A team of developers led by professor Chen Jin of Shanghai Jiatong University produced the chip, and have applied for six patents. The 16 bit chip is built on 0.18 micron technology, and can carry out 200 million instructions, the developers claimed. The chip has apparently been authenticated by the Shanghai municipal science and technology commission.
China imports upwards of $1.2bn worth of DSP chips a year since 2000. The company is expected to exploit the homegrown DSP technology to reduce its reliance on foreign imports.
