While the rest of the world grapples with the question of censorship on the Internet, China has come up with its own solution: the country’s telecommunications ministry and the Xinhua News Agency are planning to introduce a nationwide computer network that will filter information coming off the Internet, and only allow it to pass if it does not contravene the country’s strict censorship laws. The first of the regional networks which will make up the new Intranet, as it has been christened, is due to go live in the Guangdong Province this week.
