China and Singapore have signed an agreement to enhance internet connectivity with a 2Mbps direct link between the two countries. The deal, part of the overall Asia-Pacific Information Infrastructure development plan, is a bid to move away from the US-centered model where all internet traffic goes to the US before being re-routed back. Singapore communications minister Mah Bow Tan said the agreement will help realize the full potential of the internet and spur bilateral trade via electronic means. He proposed co-operation to build up Chinese-language internet content between China and Singapore.
