CBS’ UPN channel and Time Warner’s WB network have long existed in the shadow of larger broadcasting rivals. According to reports, it was decided that a merger of the channels would put the launch of a new network in a stronger position.

CW programming is expected to be aimed at a young audience and to place itself in competition with established channels such as ABC and Fox.

Tribune air will broadcast the new network’s programs, which are set to reach US television screens by September 2006.
