Paris-based Capgemini led a consortium named CUBIT which included Unisys and BT Group, which the MPS has selected as preferred bidder of the seven-year deal. The two parties will now enter into final negotiations which are expected to result in a deal being signed in November.
CUBIT is expected to begin delivery of desktop and networking services to the MPS’ 44,000 staff next summer, taking over from the current incumbents, Atos Origin and Damovo. The contract win adds to Capgemini’s presence in the UK public sector, following the $5bn contract it won with the Inland Revenue two years ago.
EDS’ disappointment at losing will only be marginally tempered by the fact that MPS’ director of information Ailsa Beaton said that it was an extremely close run race and its consortium, metAgility, is being retained as reserve bidder in case it is unable to reach a final agreement with CUBIT. I would like to extend my thanks to metAgility, said Ms Beaton, the last six months have seen thorough and detailed discussions and the decision has been difficult to say the least.
