The new games, which join Biohazard 4 (Resident Evil 4) on Capcom’s 2003 release schedule for the system, are the creations of one of the company’s internal development studios, Production Studio 4, and according to the creators, innovation is a key trait shared between them.
The four titles are Viewtiful Joe, a 2D side-scrolling action game with an stylish combat engine and an emphasis on fighting beautifully; P.N.03, an action title starring a lithe female mercenary; Dead Phoenix, a flying action title set on an ancient floating city; and Killer 7, a hard boiled action adventure featuring a conflict between two powerful underworld rivals and an unusually stark visual style.
In an industry where you create to amuse and entertain, do you sense a crisis about the industry’s continuing regression of excitement and new stimulation?, asks a statement on the Production Studio 4 website commenting on the perceived stagnation of creativity in game development. We believe that the regression of excitement is solely the fault and responsibility of we creators, it continues. By the same token, we believe it is our mission and responsibility to create something that is ‘worth seeing’ for the user.
Lofty ambitions indeed – but the involvement of talent including Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami and Devil May Cry director Hideki Kamiya bodes well for the titles, all of which will help to bring a more mature edge to the software portfolio of the GameCube.
