Canon Inc claims it developed the world’s fastest 3.5 magneto-optical disk drive with 10 times the normal recording speed, although it is not clear what the average access time is. Canon says the system can record at 2.3M-bytes per second, and store a total 350Mb, 2.7 times more than conventional magneto-optical disks. Canon plans to market the disks for next-generation multi-media personal computers starting in autumn 1994, making 30,000 a month. The drives will be $8,000, and the disks $24.
