Twitter is reportedly close to releasing its new video product, with sources claiming the release could be seen in the next few weeks.
Sources familiar with the company’s plans, according to Re/code, confirmed the launch in the coming weeks. The native video feature will be one Twitter’s most substantial platform updates in some time.
The feature will reportedly allow the use of the Twitter app to shoot, edit and post video, with sources indicating that the feature will have a time limit similar to that of Vine. Currently, Vine is the only method of sharing video available to Twitter users.
The new feature signals an attempt by the social media platform to increase engagement and increase the number of clips available to users. Twitter hopes to rival competitor Facebook, who claim that users are watching more than a billion video clips a day.
This announcement follows the recent launch of the ‘while you were away feature‘. The feature showcases important tweets at the top of the home screen, a feature which is similar to Facebook’s ‘News Feed’, where popular posts are presented at the top of the page.
