Anaheim, California-based Comarco Inc has announced that the motorist aid callbox system it manufactures exclusively for GTE Cellular Communications Corp, a subsidiary of GTE Mobilnet, has been chosen for installation on roadways throughout California’s Riverside and San Bernardino counties after the board of the Riverside County and San Bernardino County Service Authority for Freeway Emergencies unanimously chose GTE to supply up to 2,000 of the solar-powered, cellular-based phone box systems for delivery over the next year. There are now 5,000 of the units in the US, providing voice communication between stranded motorists on the Californian freeways and the highway patrol headquarters. The system is similar to the Comarco units that have been operating in San Diego and Orange Counties for the past two years. Approximately 25,000 calls per month are made from the boxes in the two counties.
