Into the midst of all the speculation about the future of Bell Communications Research, the research house primarily owned by the US Baby Bells, Cable & Wireless Plc jumped up yesterday to say that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Bellcore to establish the basis for a long-term relationship between the two companies; the company notes that it already has a relationship with Bell Northern Research, owned by BCE Inc, the 20% shareholder in its Mercury Communications Ltd subsidiary; under the pact, each member of the Cable & Wireless Federation can negotiate with Bellcore for other telecommunications consulting services, including licensing of technology.
