The figures mean that an average of 45 million SMS messages were sent each day compared to 33 million in August 2001. The rise is partly due to the holiday season and examination results, as students shared their results with friends and family. The Association says that it recorded a 10% increase in text messaging on the days of the GCSE and A-level results.
The number of messages sent in the UK this year, including the August figures, is 10 billion. The MDA forecasts the total to reach 16 billion for 2002.
