In what has basically become a standard move for modem manufacturers looking to eradicate consumer hesitation, Boca Research Inc is the latest company to offer free upgrades of its products to the eventual 56kbps standard. With the widespread pledges of free upgrades, modem makers are betting heavily on which of the two competing standards will prevail in an effort to spur lackluster sales of the new products. The International Telecommunications Union is expected to approve a standard by January 1998, but for now Boca is in the Rockwell camp.
