Blue Coat Systems Inc has outlined a product roadmap that combines its application monitoring, WAN optimisation and secure web gateway technologies to produce an infrastructure platform for the acceleration, management and security of business applications and web content running across the enterprise network.

Dubbed the Application Delivery Network, the technology draws into an integrated toolset new and enhanced software and the products the company acquired with its takeover of Packeteer last June.

In its scheme, PacketShaper appliances are deployed to classify and monitor applications and application attributes before applying appropriate bandwidth and quality of service controls.

Related ProxySG appliances are deployed to identify users and assess and classify web content, to apply a variety of policy-based controls. They are designed also to reduce WAN and internet gateway bandwidth consumption.

When used in conjunction with Blue Coat’s WebFilter software and WebPulse service, the appliances will also prevent malicious threats from compromising application security or performance, the company claims.

Announcing an early milestone in its new product strategy, the Sunnyvale, California-based company today also unveiled the Blue Coat IntelligenceCenter, an application performance dashboard.

“The starting point for ensuring effective application response time is having visibility into what applications are running and understanding how they are performing at any given location for any given user,” Carrie Oakes, VP at Blue Coat Systems said of the software release.
