Cingular Wireless is the first operator to offer the push-to-talk service on the newest BlackBerry model, called Pearl, in the US.
But the deal enables RIM to integrate a Java version of Kodiak’s client with various BlackBerry handsets.
Cingular’s Pearl service claims several unique push-to-talk features, according to Kodiak. For example, callers will see the availability status of the BlackBerry user they are trying to reach, such as available, silent, do not disturb and unavailable.
Also, they have the ability to alert others that they need to talk and allows them to call back directly from the push-to-talk button. Call waiting and voice messaging are also included.
One cool feature is the ability of the Pearl to convert an individual or group push-to-talk calls to a standard cellular call or instant mobile conference call.
The deal between Canada’s RIM and San Ramon, California-based Kodiak also includes joint development and marketing.
