Cables de Lyon SA, Asea Brown Boveri AG, BICC Plc, GEC Plc, Siemens AG and Pirelli SpA have joined forces to promote Europe-wide research to develop a high temperature superconductor electrical cable that will function without power loss at temperatures above -196oC and eventually at ambient temperatures. The European Commission is sponsoring the effort and will put up half the $4m or so needed for the first phase, which will involve a search for new superconducting materials.
