Bell Communications Research, research laboratory owned jointly by the Baby Bells, says it has spun off a new company, Surety Technologies Inc, based in Livingston, New Jersey, which will market a tamper-proof, time-stamp seal for electronic documents based on a patented Bellcore technology, so that for example if you digitise your song, you can time-stamp it and prove that you wrote it when some upstart comes along and tries to pass it off as his; Bellcore will retain a small equity stake and receive royalties for the technology.
