The announcement from the Basking Ridge, New Jersey-based developer of enterprise comms technology means that version 2.0 of its VPNremote for IP Phones software can now be integrated into both Cisco and Juniper VPN environments, rather than only working with Avaya’s own firewall/VPN products, the SG200 and SG5/SG5X series of products.
Cisco and Juniper have major customer bases with their VPN products, so Avaya is opening up significantly the addressable market for its 4600 series of high-end IP phones, which are the devices that can ship with the VPNremote software.
With Juniper, moreover, Avaya already has a partnership, announced in January, in the area of secure VoIP, one dimension of which is support for enterprise mobility over Juniper’s VPN. In the case of Cisco, Avaya is a direct competitor in VoIP and IPT, so it will be seeking to offer the 4600 series at prices that will make Cisco shops consider them against the equivalent Cisco IP phones for teleworkers.
