Aureal Semiconductor Inc, the 3D chip specialist from Fremont, California, has won Dell Computer Inc as a customer fot its Vortex AU8820 digital audio processor. The deal comes through Dell’s choice of the Turtle Beach Montego A3D card from Voyetra Technologies Inc of Yonkers, New York for its Dell Dimension XPS D300 and 333MHz systems. Dell claims it is the first to use Aureal’s Vortex PCI device, which supports legacy DOS games as well as interactive audio, professional quality wavetable synthesis, DirectSound acceleration and high quality sample rate conversion. Vortex chalked up its second year of posting losses of around $17m per year earlier this month (CI No 3,359), but said the figures don’t reflect the first shipments of the new chip.
