AT&T Network Systems has introduced a SONET-based digital loop carrier the SLC-2000 Access System, which offers capability for narrow and wideband services. The system provides for voice and ISDN services, as well as local area switching services, for example, Caller ID and video services. It will also support future services such as broadband ISDN, high definition television, switched multi-megabit data services and metropolitan area networks. AT&T says that because the SLC-2000 Access System can evolve to an Access Interface Unit on the 5ESS-2000 Switch module, it offers increased services and cost effective inventory management through the reuse of channel shelves. Features include downloadable software, compatibility with phase two SONET standards and standard network interfaces, and modularity. Fibre distribution allows service providers to begin placing fibre immediately. However, the system also supports copper. SLC-2000 Access System will be available in 1992.
