AT&T Co announced yesterday the formation of a joint venture to manufacture transmission equipment in the People’s Republic of China: AT&T Network Systems International BV of the Netherlands owns 50% of the new AT&T of Shanghai Ltd, which will make, sell and service digital transmission equipment for public and private network customers in China; products will include high capacity lightwave systems, digital multiplexers and channel banks, which convert analogue speech signals into digital form; partners in the venture are Shanghai Optical Fibre Communications Engineering Corp, with 28% of the new company, and Shanghai Telecommunications Equipment Factory taking the rest.
