Apple Computer Inc ran the first of its television advertisements last night promoting its new G4 professional desktop range (see Top Stories). The systems show a G4 surrounded by tanks. The voiceover informs us that the system, due to its one gigaflops performance range that puts it into the supercomputer class, is the first to be classified by the US Army as a weapon. Uncle Sam doesn’t want to see it getting into the wrong hands the voiceover intones. As for the Pentium III – it’s harmless. Jobs says the ad was inspired by the government itself, which has indicated to Apple that it is not authorized to export the system to sensitive countries.
