Apple Computer Inc has announced the availability of version 1.1 of its integrated Internet access system, Apple Internet Connection Kit 1.1. The 1.1 release of the kit incorporates NetScape Communications Corp Navigator 2.0, and is touted as offering network access procedures, through the latest revision of Apple’s networking and communications system, Open Transport 1.1. Also included is the latest update to Mac OS – System 7.5 Update 2.0. Other components of the kit include the Apple Internet Dialer, which now offers five Internet service providers – Netcom On-Line Communication Services Inc, Portal Information Network Inc, MCI Communications Corp’s InternetMCI, Concentric Network Corp and PSINet Inc. Apple claims that it streamlines the process of registration and automatically configures all the necessary settings and applications for the user. Also included is Claris Emailer Lite version 1.0, and version 3.0 of Fetch File Transfer Protocol software, claimed to offer better user access to File Transfer Protocol services to download specific files. NewsWatcher browser software provides users with access to Usenet newsgroup discussions, and MacPPP 2.5 allows the use of MacTCP over a modem line, so that Macintosh and Internet applications can communicate with Point-to-Point Protocol used by the Internet. NCSA Telnet terminal emulation software is also included, enabling a Mac to emulate a terminal for connection to Unix-based libraries and catalogs. QuickTime VR Player and RealAudio Player from Progressive Networks Inc also come bundled, along with Adobe Systems Inc Acrobat Reader. Suggested retail price for the kit is $60, but $20 for existing customers.
