Apple Computer Inc has bought distribution rights from Connectix Corp for its Mode32 utility, which will be offered free to users of the Macintosh II, IIx, IIcx, and SE/30 so that they can access the virtual memory addressing features of System 7.0: according to Microbytes, the utility is necessary because the ROMs in these models are not able to execute 32-bit addressing, and enables users of 32-bit-unclean Macs access up to 128Mb of physical RAM using System 7 and Mac II users up to 72Mb, which was not possible previously on these four systems; it is not needed for the Mac LC, IIci, IIsi, IIfx; it is not useful for non-virtual 68000 systems.
