All the major Japanese players are rushing out smaller or faster or cheaper or all three notebook computers, and Sony Corp’s latest offering is the QL/Note PCX-310NR series: there are three models, all based on the 80386SX chip, and all use both a hard disk, either 20Mb or 40Mb on the top two, and an IC card for memory and program load; Dr Toshihiko Doi, director of the Sony Super-Micro Division, reckons that the Sony machine represents a second-generation notebook computer because it can exchange data with desktop machines and be linked on Ethernet local area networks running the Novell Inc NetWare operating system; a Japanese language version of NetWare is currently under development.
