The Maidenhead, UK-based company said the ODF Virtual File System will provide a shared drive interface to any office application and will enable users to save content into intelligent drop-zones where it will be automatically converted into the Open Document Format.
Alfresco said the Virtual File System will be as compatible with Microsoft Office as OpenOffice.org and will be added to its open source Community Network build soon as a preview to the forthcoming version 1.4.
ODF emerged from the open source community as the default format for OpenOffice.org, but it is also used in a number of closed source application suites, such as Sun Microsystems Inc’s StarOffice, and IBM Corp’s Workplace.
Microsoft recently announced plans to support ODF via a third-party Open XML Translator project, which will eventually be available as an add-in translation tool that will enable Office 2007 users to read and write ODF documents.
