Alcatel said the deal will give the combined entity nearly 25% of the voice portal market, more than twice the size of its closest competitor. Alcatel also said it expects the market for voice self-service to double in the next three years.

Toronto, Canada-based VoiceGenie was founded in 2000 and employs approximately 90 people. The company is privately held and has received two rounds of funding. It is thought that equity group Insight Venture Partners acquired a major equity stake in the company in 2003 when it made a $10m investment.

The company makes software for voice-activated communications services such as virtual operators and speech-recognition orders. Its customer base includes carriers such as Verizon Communications Inc, AT&T Corp, and Orange SA. VoiceGenie said its voice self-service solutions are based on Voice XML, which is an open standard used for developing self-service applications.

By acquiring VoiceGenie, just three months after acquiring GMK, a leading provider of self-service solutions in Brazil, we reaffirm our commitment to the voice self-service market, said Wes Hayden, president and CEO of Genesys. VoiceGenie is extremely well-respected for its technology and its market presence, especially in North America.
