Restructuring costs and lay-offs pushed the Belgian Alcatel Bell Telephone unit, formerly Bell Telephone Manufacturing Company, of Alcatel NV into losses last year: the unit lost the equivalent of $5.7m against a profit the previous year of $6m, on sales down 13% at $632m.
