Advanced Micro Devices Inc, Sunnyvale has a new, lower cost version of its highly integrated Am29200 RISC microcontroller for the 16-bit embedded control applications market. It claims the 29205 to be the only 16-bit bus RISC microcontroller to combine a complete subsystem on a single device, including flexible memory controller for ROM, RAM or SRAM memory, two-channel DMA controller, a 24-bit timer, a wait-state generator, and programmable input-output, serial and parallel ports. At 8 MIPS, it is claimed to offer three-to-five times the performance of the 68000 controller with minimal increase in implementation costs and is aimed at laser printer, scanner, networking, telecommunications and mass storage applications. Samples now, volume first quarter at $34 for 1,000-up.
