Adobe Systems Inc, headquartered in Mountain View, California has announced a new PostScript printer controller board based on the 16MHz Am29000 RISC microprocessor from Advanced Micro Devices: the Amethyst controller is targeted at low to medium-speed raster printers, and may be configured with varying amounts of random or read only memory; random access memory varies between 2Mb and 32Mb, and read only memory is between 1.5Mb and 6Mb; it accepts input via RS-232 and RS-422 serial ports, via a Centronics parallel port, or via AppleTalk, and it also provides SCSI support; the Amethyst joins the Emerald, based on the R3000 microprocessors from MIPS Computer Systems Inc; Ruby, based on Intel Corp’s 80960K series embedded processor; and Sapphire, using the XL-8220 from Weitek Inc.
