Despite the personal computer price bloodbath, Acer Inc made a group profit of about $3m in the first half of 1992 because of a big reduction in losses at its US operations, Reuter reports from Taipei: the group made an estimated $13m in profits during the second quarter, rebounding from a loss of $10m in the first quarter, Acer said; group sales rose 18% to $568m in the half; chairman Stan Shih said that competition would rise substantially in the second half of this year and profit margins would narrow following the sharp price cuts by large manufacturers such as Compaq Computer Corp – this is part of an overall industry shakeout, Shih said, adding that the computer industry had entered a period of high-volume, low-profit sales.
