Hewlett-Packard Co formally introduced its already previewed NewWave Office environment to the UK last week, and outlined some details of its future plans for the NewWave graphical user interface. NewWave, which has no desktop manager, will be running on top of the Open Software Foundation’s Motif graphical user interface by the end of next year, as well as on Presentation Manager. The company says it is currently engaged in the difficult process of implementing the Object Management Facility at the core of NewWave for the two environments. Meanwhile the project to produce an X Window version of Presentation Manager – PM/X – which will be a Motif emulation of Presentation Manager, is also creeping along slowly. The translation is not expected to be complete for some time yet, and when it is, the application will be sold as Motif. NewWave Office costs from UKP160 to UKP73,000, and is available now.
