3Com Corp has announced enhancements to its AccessBuilder remote-access server, taken over as part of its acquisition of Centrum Communications Inc. The additions – which follow the internetworking enhancements announced by the San Jose company in April – cover the areas of security and network management. The main addition is a Windows-based network management package, dubbed Transcend AccessBuilder Manager, that the company says fits in with its Transcend Enterprise Manager product. Simple Network Management Protocol-based, it is said to enable users to configure the AccessBuilder in under five minutes. The main security enhancement is the option to base user authentication based on Security Dynamics Advanced Computing Environment/Server, Novell Inc NetWare Bindery and NetWare Directory Services. The company says it will also add support for Microsoft Corp’s Chicago, Apple Computer Inc ARAP 2.0 and IBM Corp OS/2 clients, as well as Point to Point compatability with Microsoft’s Windows NT Daytona. 3Com says it is providing the new enhancements at no extra charge.
