Worldwide smartphone sales reached 225 million units during second quarter, which has overtaken the number feature phone sold during the period for the first time, according to a new report from Gartner.

Global smartphone sales rose 46.5% during the second quarter of 2013 to 225 million units, while the overall mobile phone sales reached 435 million units, up 3.6%.

During the quarter, feature phone sales totalled 210 million, reporting 21% compared to the corresponding quarter in 2012.

Gartner principal research analyst Anshul Gupta said that smartphones accounted for 51.8% of mobile phone sales in the second quarter of 2013, resulting in smartphone sales surpassing feature phone sales for the first time.

"Asia/Pacific, Latin America and Eastern Europe exhibited the highest smartphone growth rates of 74.1 percent, 55.7 percent and 31.6 percent respectively, as smartphone sales grew in all regions," Gupta said.

Samsung topped the list of global smartphone market, with 31.7% rise in its sales during Q2, followed by, Nokia with 60 million units sold; Apple with 32 million units sold, reporting 10.2% rise from a year ago period.

The global smartphone operating system market was lead by Android (79%), followed by iOS (14.2), Microsoft (3.3%), BlackBerry (2.7%), Bada (0.4%), Symbian (0.3%) and others captured 0.2% of OS market share.

"While Microsoft has managed to increase share and volume in the quarter, Microsoft should continue to focus on growing interest from app developers to help grow its appeal among users," Gupta said.

"Android continued to increase its lead, garnering 79 percent of the market in the second quarter.

"With second quarter of 2013 sales broadly on track, we see little need to adjust our expectations for worldwide mobile phone sales forecast to total 1.82 billion units this year."
