Hon Hai Precision Industry, which assembles Apple’s iPhones and iPads, is looking to invest $40m in the US state of Pennsylvania inefforts to move away from its low-margin contract business.

The Taiwanese firm said it will initially invest $30m,appointing 500 employees in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, over the following two years to establish a high-end supply chain, while the remaining $10m will be used to develop robotics with Carnegie Mellon University.

Hon Hai Precision Industry chairman Terry Gou said that Pennsylvania, Virginia and New Jersey have offered the company very attractive investment incentives.

"We consider investments in the U.S. because we want to establish a high-tech manufacturing base in the country," Gou said.

The contract manufacturer for consumer electronics is also looking to expand its presence in medical, automotive and environmentally friendly products.

Earlier this month, Foxconn also revealed plans to build a facility in Arizona to manufacture large display panels and large-panel TVs to boost its presence in the US market.
