Veryant has introduced vCOBOL Enterprise, a platform expected to support smooth transition of legacy COBOL applications off IBM mainframes to UNIX, Linux, and Microsoft Windows systems which are more affordable.

The company claims vCOBOL Enterprise preserves the business logic developed in existing COBOL programmes without loss of performance or availability while the migration takes place.

Gartner research vice president in the Application Strategy and Governance group Dale Vecchio said rehosting code to lower cost platforms can save costs and help pay for subsequent modernisation activities.

With this offering, Veryant has transferred most of the operational analysis and execution instructions tasks that are typically performed by alternative COBOL platforms during runtime to the vCOBOL Compiler.

This is expected to improve critical runtime performance commonly associated with mainframe IBM CICS transactions, IBM IMS applications, CA IDMS workloads, and batch environments that are re-platformed to open systems.
