Video games maker and publisher Valve has launched the new Linux-based SteamOS, which is believed to offer PC experience in the living room.
Game maker’s first of three launches due during the week, the code for the new OS would be freely offered for manufacturers who plan to develop their own gaming hardware.
Valve said in a statement that the new SteamOS incorporates significant performance increases in graphics processing, and the firm is now targeting audio performance and reductions in input latency at the operating system level.
"Game developers are already taking advantage of these gains as they target SteamOS for their new releases," the game maker said.
"As we’ve been working on bringing Steam to the living room, we’ve come to the conclusion that the environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam itself.
"SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen."
The US game maker is also planning to launch its own mechanism to run the new OS, which is would be dubbed as Steam Box.
