The company reported an operating loss of E262m ($346.7m) compared to an operating profit of E489m ($647m) in the same quarter last year.
It shipped 24.2 million phones, down 21.4% over last year, as selling price declined from E123 ($163) to E121 ($160). The company’s market share in the mobile device market for the quarter remained flat at about 8%.
For the fiscal year it reported a net loss of E73m ($69.6m), compared to a net profit of E1.11 billion ($1.47 billion) last year, on revenue down 22.9% at E11.2 billion ($1.48 billion).
During the quarter, the company introduced the Xperia X1 and Cyber-shot C905 handsets. It also joined the Open Handset Alliance and is currently developing a new phone based on the Android Open Source software.
Dick Komiyama, president at Sony Ericsson, said: Our business alignment is progressing as planned, with the full effect of annual savings of around E300m ($397m) expected by the second half of 2009. We foresee a continued deterioration in the market in 2009, particularly in the first half.
