Consumers will no longer be able to buy Windows 7 preinstalled PCs from retail outlet as Microsoft has announced that it will no longer sell the operating system.
The company added that the last day for selling Windows 7 Home Basic, Home Premium, Ultimate and Professional was 31st October, but Microsoft has not given an expiry date to PCs pre installed with Windows 7 Professional.
However, the software giant will provide support for Windows 7 until 13 January 2015, with extended support till January 2020.
Reports suggest that the move is aimed prompting users to migrate to the latest version of the OS, as from now on Windows 8.1 will come as standard for PCs.
Another report suggests that users will be able to buy Windows 7 PC because there is plenty of stock in the market and marketers are likely to sell them off before offering the latest version.
The original version of Windows 8 was not popular amongst users, as the company removed some popular features of the earlier version in the software.
The company has also discontinued selling boxed retail copies of Windows 8 despite being released in 2012.
