Equinix, a US-based provider of data centre services, has expanded its GRX Peering @ Equinix service to customers located in the company’s Washington, DC area International Business Exchange data center campus.

The expansion of GRX Peering @ Equinix (GPE) to the US market comes after the GSM Association, the global trade association representing more than 750 GSM mobile phone operators, has selected the Equinix Washington, DC area International Business Exchange (IBX) as the Global Roaming Exchange (GRX) peering hub in North America.

Currently offered to GRX operators in the Asia-Pacific region from Equinix’s Singapore IBX center, GPE is claimed to feature an ethernet-based switching platform designed to ensure better interconnectivity between mobile networks.

Eric Troyer, director of peering services at Equinix, said: The GRX Peering initiative has addressed this issue and significantly enhanced performance. With the expansion of GRX Peering to the Equinix Washington, DC area data center campus, mobile data transfer for users in the US will be further enhanced, as it can now occur inside the US, as opposed to being routed through the other GRX Peering hubs in Amsterdam and Singapore.
