The study by Harvard Business Review asked 1,443 to rate the quality of 43,778 tweets. Respondents said only 36% of tweets were actually worth reading.

Another 39% said that tweets are "just ok" along with respondents reporting that 25% of tweets are not even worth reading.

The study shows a good Tweeter may be hard to find on the microblogging service which boast around 500 million users generating 175 million tweets per day.

The research suggests tips on keeping followers interested and engaged. However, the ratings Twitterers are advised to be clear, avoid overusing hashtags, and don’t retweet one-on-one conversations.

"The key is to be aware of one’s audience and how different people’s values may differ," says Paul André, one of the researchers.

Twitter made headlines earlier this week by creating the Innovator’s Patent Agreement (IPA). The microblogging service says they worry about how patents can be used to "impede the innovation of others" and because of this have created the Innovator’s Patent Agreement (IPA). The company says it will allow its engineers to have control over patents created to prevent the patents being used offensively against others.

"The IPA is a new way to do patent assignment that keeps control in the hands of engineers and designers," said Twitter. "It is a commitment from Twitter to our employees that patents can only be used for defensive purposes."

Creator control over patents will remain if the patents are sold. Thus, companies have to have permission from creators if they want to use patents for other purposes.
