Missing the World Cup? Desperate for the domestic season to get going? CBR takes a look at the best smartphone apps for keeping up with the latest footy news and action.
1. Sky Sports Score Centre
Featuring live scores, team line ups, news, league tables, fixtures and, thanks to a recent update, video action. This is the perfect app to keep up to date. It lets you choose your favourite team, so their latest matches and news is always the first thing you see when you fire up the app. It’s not just limited to England’s leagues; it also features information from leagues all over Europe. The app is available free.
2. My Football Pro 2
Stats, stats and more stats. Over 600 leagues, live information, push messages when goals are scored, news, match reports, player career stats, tables, just about everything you need for keeping up to date with the world of football. It comes in a variety of languages, including English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.
3. Sky Mobile TV
The great app that offers streaming over Wi-Fi and 3G of not only Sky Sports 1, 2, 3 and 4 but also Sky News (both sport and, er, ‘regular’), At The Races and ESPN. It’s free but will cost you £6 per month if you’re not a Sky subscriber. It’s fantastic for watching games on the go.
4. Football Manager Handheld 2010
If you’re disillusioned with your team’s performance and think you can do a better job than whoever your beleaguered manager may be then this is the app for you. The greatest football management game ever created comes to the iPhone. It’s a stripped back version lacking the impressive 3D match simulation of the desktop version but it’s still packed with all the features you’d expect from the game. It’s £6.99 – not the cheapest out there but a must for all fans of the game.
5. Footy Pubs 2010
Uses your location to track down the nearest pubs that will be showing the football. It even offers directions from your current location, ensuring you won’t miss any of the action. You can even search for pubs showing specific games, so you can do a bit of forward planning. The app also lets you add a pub to the database if you find one not already listed. There are some teething issues with this, with updates sometimes being quite slow and listing not always being accurate. But it is free.
