The Wi-Fi Alliance has made predictions about the future of Wi-Fi and the forms it will take in the future.

Speaking to Geek Beat at CES in Las Vegas, CEO Edgar Figuero discussed plans for their new platform, ‘Wi-Fi Aware’, which he claims will be the first in a trend.

He commented: "I think of (Wi-Fi Aware) as the first version of ‘smart wi-fi’: wi-fi that will be working for you without you having to do anything."

Figuero explained how Wi-Fi will eventually be able to automatically and intuitively provide users with useful information based on the context.

"Let’s say that you have pre-configured your favourite game on your phone, and you jump on a train. You could get a prompt saying: ‘somebody with your skill level is two cars down, do you want to have a game right now?’"

Stating that rudimentary applications of this technology had already begun to come out, he also hinted that these new smart wi-fi platforms would provide valuable commercial opportunities.

He added: "This will be a platform where Tumblr, Linkedin and Facebook will be able to innovate on top of."
