San Jose chipmaker VLSI Technology Inc has introduced an integrated Digital Video Broadcasting-compliant MPEG-2 transport device with an on-chip Digital Video descrambling engine. The new VES2030 has hardware cyclic redundancy checking which saves the host processor from having to perform error detection functions in the software, freeing up the host processor for other functions. In addition, it has direct teletext output support which enables it to extract teletext data from the MPEG2 transport stream and forward it to the NTSC or PAL video encoder without any interaction from the host processor. This alleviates the need for a dedicated chip to extract teletext data from the MPEG2 transport stream. Canal Plus of France has certified the transport chip for implementation in its set-top boxes, said Paul Vrooment, VLSI vice-president and general manager of the Consumer Digital Entertainment Group.
