Symantec has released Encryption Everywhere, a security package to protect websites from cyber-attacks.

The package allows web hosting providers to integrate encryption into websites from the moment of their creation. All customer data shared on a business’s website is encrypted.

This means that the web hosts can offer a range of options as part of their services, from basic website encryption to premium security packages.

Customers already secured include InterNetX, which has 3.8 million domains.

Only around 3 percent of the billion web sites that exist today are encrypted, according to Roxane Divol, senior vice president and general manager, Website Security, Symantec.

The company’s Internet Security Threat Report argued that to remain viable websites will have to use at least basic encryption by 2018.

"It’s time to secure every legitimate website and win back security on the internet for every business and consumer," says Divol. "That’s why Symantec is making it easy to secure any website from the very moment it is registered or renewed, starting with free, basic encryption all the way through to complete website security solutions."

The announcement comes following high-profile attacks last year on company websites, such as those of TalkTalk and Ashley Madison.

Most major websites, however, including the above, use the HTTPS protocol.

Google announced that it would push unencrypted websites further down in its search rankings.

In January 2016, Google announced that its Chrome browser will offer the ability to flag up unencrypted sites, denoting them with a red cross.
