Spansion has unveiled the industry’s fastest serial Flash memory, the Spansion FL-S NOR Flash memory family at 65nm.

Spansion claims the product family has over 20% faster double data rate (DDR) read speeds and three times the programming speed over competing serial Flash offerings.

Available from 128 Mb (megabit) to 1 Gb (gigabit), the Spansion FL-S delivers automotive grade temperature ranges, and in some applications eliminates the need for DRAM.

Spansion vice president of strategic and product marketing Robert France said with their newest Spansion FL-S product family, they deliver advanced performance and address specific application requirements, which will enable their customers to design innovative next generation electronics.

It features up to 1.5 MBps write speed; industry-standard form-factors via Spansion’s Universal Footprint; low pin count; and common flash interface (CFI) data for configuration information.

It offers expanded security options to protect customer IP through 1kByte one-time programmable (OTP) region, individual sector protection, and hardware and software data protection, coupled with 128 bit tracking ID for system authentication.

The Spansion FL-S product family can be used in automotive applications; consumer electronics, such as home gateways, digital TVs, set top boxes and printers; smart meters; and WiMax systems.

The company said it is sampling the 128 and 256 Mb Spansion FL-S products and will start production in October, while the 512 Mb density will be in production in Q4 with the 1 Gb density in Q2 2012.
