Silicon Graphics Inc is to introduce a new feature for its Octane workstations to enable two users to work from one of the dual processor machine at the same time. Octane CADduo will also mean the price of the workstations are reduced, halving the cost of a dual processor Octane. Two users will be able to work at full speed, simultaneously on one workstation. Users will be able to share the workstation hardware, and instead of having two CAD seats with 128Mb of memory each, users can share a 256Mb memory space, making better use of the memory available. The addition of CADduo comes at a time when the workstation players are all battling for supremacy. Silicon Graphics has been put under increased strain recently, with the introduction of Sun Microsystems Inc’s Darwin workstations, the company claiming it will be able to knock Silicon Graphics from the workstation top spot (CI No 3,325). US pricing was not available as we went to press.
