Following the announcement of what will be the single largest investment in broadband digital infrastructure in over ten years, Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson said:

"Virgin Media’s planned investment will change lives and transform communities – giving people better access to education, healthcare, financial systems and employment – it will also have a huge positive impact on the UK as whole."

The Founder of Virgin Group added: "This project is an important step in making the UK an even more competitive country."

Virgin Media’s £3 billion broadband investment will see the expansion of its fibre network to an additional four million premises over the next five years, reaching a total of 17 million premises by 2020.

According to economic consultancy Oxera, the investment will produce a further £8 billion in economic activity and it is claimed that 6,000 jobs will be created.

Households now connecting to Virgin Media will have access to broadband speeds of 152Mbps.

"We all look forward to watching it roll out to enhance the lives of individuals and help more businesses thrive in the global digital economy," Sir Richard wrote in a blog posted on the Virgin website.
