New year search traffic has focused on resolutions, the shooting at French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and events in the year ahead, according to Google.

Amid the inevitable rush for dieting, weight loss and fitness advice, many sought tickets to the music festival Coachella 2015, while the 80th birthday of Elvis Presley on January 8 saw many revisit his back catalogue.

Jenise Araujo, communications associate at Google, said: "The Dash Diet made it onto the trends charts after it took the number one spot on The U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings of the best diets."

"Created by physicians to help treat high blood pressure, DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) emphasises fruits, veggies, whole grains and low sodium. So long, carbs; it was nice knowing you."

The assault on the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris yielded the first notable hashtag of the year in #JeSuisCharlie, a tribute to the historical film Spartacus in which the title character’s fellow slaves protect him by each proclaiming: "I am Spartacus."

Other notable trends in the first week of the year included a frenzy over a Calvin Klein underwear advert featuring the pop artist Justin Bieber, as well as an upcoming Marvel Comics film Ant-Man, which is due to be released in July.
