India’s Astra Microwave Products, a supplier of microwave
wireless technologies used in defence, space, and telecommunications has won an order worth $11.5 million from Israel’s Elta Systems. A group subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries, Elta is a provider of electromagnetic sensors-based advanced defense systems for radar, electronic warfare, and communications.

The order is for the supply of microwave wireless sub-systems for India’s defence radar programme. The contract will be effective from November 2008 to mid-2010.

The order from Elta is Astra’s first contract under the offset obligations clause of India’s Defence Procurement Policy, 2006. The offsets clause mandates that 30% of all defence contracts worth INR3 billion and above must be invested in the Indian defence industry by way of sourcing components, sharing technology, setting up training facilities, or using IT services.

B Malla Reddy, managing director of Astra Microwave Products, said: The ELTA contract showcases Astra Microwave’s global technological capalilities.

Offset obligations are a significant opportunity for manufacturers and technology providers in the Indian defence space. Our proven technological expertise, infrastructure, and processes are a strong positive differentiator with global defence suppliers. Going forward, we are confident of forging many such relationships.
